Minnesota'sΒ New State Flag

Minnesota unveiled a redesigned state flag in 2024, marking the fourth iteration since 1893. The new design features a dark blue field representing the night sky, shaped to resemble the state's outline. A prominent eight-pointed star, symbolizing the North Star, is positioned on this field, mirroring the one in the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda. The remaining space is filled with a bright blue color representing Minnesota's abundant waters. This change aligns with a nationwide trend of states updating their flags for better recognition.

A New Star for the North Star State: The History of Minnesota's 2024 Flag

Minnesota’s 2024 state flag marked a significant departure from its predecessors. The state had cycled through three flag designs since its adoption in 1893, each reflecting the era’s sensibilities and values.

Historical Minnesota State Flag History

Adopted: August 2, 1893
Minnesota Flag Design: State seal on a medium blue field
Designed by: Amelia Hyde Center

The Minnesota state flag was adopted by the Legislature in 1893 when it accepted the design submitted by Amelia Hyde Center of Minneapolis.

Minnesota state flag depicts the state seal on a blue background. The seal shows a pioneer plowing the virgin prairie and an American Indian on horseback. At the top of the seal is the state motto, "L'Etoile du Nord," or star of the north. Three dates on the flag signify the establishment of historic Fort Snelling in 1819, the acceptance of Minnesota as a state in 1858, and the adoption of the state flag in 1893.

The 19 stars in the flag symbolize Minnesota as the 19th state to be admitted to the Union after the original 13. The largest of these stars is centered above the seal to symbolize the north star state.

The original flag had two sides, blue on one side and white on the other. But because the flag was so expensive to make, and because it was easily damaged in high winds, the Legislature adopted the onesided, all-blue design in 1957. The idea was to produce the Minnesota flag more cheaply to urge people to display it in preparation for the state's centennial in 1958.

The original 1893 flag, like many early state flags, was complex, featuring a detailed state seal at its center. This design, while representative of the state, was often criticized for its intricacy and lack of simplicity. In 1957, a simplified version was adopted, removing much of the detail. Yet, even this revised flag struggled to resonate with many Minnesotans.

The impetus for a complete redesign emerged in the early 21st century. Critics argued that the existing flag was visually cluttered and failed to capture the essence of Minnesota. A growing movement for flag redesign gained momentum, culminating in the establishment of the State Emblems Redesign Commission in 2023.

The commission embarked on a comprehensive process, soliciting designs from the public and engaging in extensive community outreach. Thousands of submissions poured in, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives and ideas. The final design, selected from this pool, was a bold departure from the past.

The new flag, unveiled in 2024, is a minimalist masterpiece. Its clean lines and symbolic elements have garnered both praise and criticism. Proponents argue that the flag effectively represents Minnesota's identity as the North Star State, while critics contend that it lacks historical context. Regardless of public opinion, the 2024 flag has undoubtedly sparked a conversation about state identity and the role of symbols in shaping a community.

As Minnesota moves forward with this new emblem, its citizens will continue to grapple with the question of what it means to be a Minnesotan and how best to visually represent that identity.
